Poltava State Agrarian University students visit Lithuania's leading dairy laboratory

On 9 September, as part of the UniClaD project «Enhancing capacity of universities to initiate and to participate in clusters development on innovation and sustainability principles», students from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Food Technology at Poltava State Agrarian University visited Pieno tуrimai, the only independent laboratory in Lithuania (Kaunas) that operates as a unified system for assessing the composition and quality of milk and is authorised to perform these functions. It is considered to be one of the most accurate in Europe. All producers are required by law to send milk samples to this laboratory. In this way, the government not only controls the quality and quantity of milk, but also checks for health problems and can react to them in good time.

The laboratory currently serves 24,000 dairy farms in the country and tests 4.5 million milk samples a year. Testing is continuous, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with laboratory staff working in shifts. The accuracy of the methods used by the laboratory is 95%.

The laboratory was established by the Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture.
